About NSTSE

The National Science Talent Search Examination (NSTSE) is a nationwide competitive exam conducted in India for students from Class 2 to Class 12. It is organized by the Unified Council, a non-profit organization that aims to identify and nurture talented students in the field of science. NSTSE assesses students’ knowledge, understanding, and problem-solving abilities in subjects like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and General Knowledge. The exam follows a multiple-choice question format, and students are awarded marks based on their accuracy and speed in answering the questions.

Eligibility

  1. Class Levels: Students from classes I to XII are eligible to participate in NSTSE. This includes students from all streams such as PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) and PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology).

  2. School Registration: Generally, NSTSE requires schools to be registered with the examination. In such cases, students participate in NSTSE through their respective schools. The registration forms, prospectus, and other relevant details are sent to the registered schools.

  3. Individual Entries: In situations where a student’s school is not registered with NSTSE, individual entries are accepted. This means that students can still participate in NSTSE independently by registering themselves directly for the exam.

Application Form

School Registration: The school needs to register its students for NSTSE by sending a name list of participating students to the Unified Council. This indicates that individual students cannot register directly and must go through their respective schools.

  1. Demand Draft: The school is required to submit a single consolidated Demand Draft (DD) as the application fee for all the registered students. The DD should be drawn in favor of Unified Council and payable at Hyderabad.

  2. Sending the Documents: The school should send the name list of students and the DD to the address specified by the Unified Council. The recommended methods of sending the documents include Courier Service, Registered post, or Speed post.

Direct Registration: The Unified Council allows candidates to register directly for NSTSE. This means that students can register themselves for the exam without going through their schools.

Syllabus

NSTSE Question Papers are designed to be suitable for students following various educational boards such as CBSE, ICSE, ISC, and State Boards. The question papers are developed in a way that covers the common topics and concepts taught in these different syllabi.

Exam Pattern

  • For Class I, the NSTSE exam consists of a total of 40 questions. It includes 15 questions from Mathematics and 25 questions from General Science.
  • In Class II, the NSTSE exam comprises a total of 50 questions. It includes 20 questions from Mathematics and 30 questions from Science.
  • For Class III to Class V, the NSTSE exam has a total of 60 questions. It includes 25 questions from Mathematics, 30 questions from General Science, and an additional 5 questions on Critical Thinking.
  • In Class VI to X, the NSTSE exam consists of a total of 60 questions. It includes 10 questions each from Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, 25 questions from Mathematics, and 5 questions on Critical Thinking.
  • For Class XI and Class XII (PCM), the NSTSE exam includes a total of 60 questions. It includes 25 questions from Mathematics, 15 questions each from Chemistry and Physics, and 5 questions on Critical Thinking.
  • Lastly, for Class XI and Class XII (PCB), the NSTSE exam consists of a total of 60 questions. It includes 25 questions from Biology, 15 questions each from Chemistry and Physics, and 5 questions on Critical Thinking.

Results & Rankings

The National Science Talent Search Examination (NSTSE) evaluates the performance of participants based on their individual scores, which are compiled in a Student Performance Report (SPR). The SPR offers a comprehensive analysis of the student’s performance, highlighting their strong and weak areas.

The SPR provides detailed insights into the student’s performance and includes a comparison of their scores at the school, state, and national levels. This allows students to gauge their performance in relation to their peers from different regions and across the country. Additionally, the NSTSE provides consolidated reports per subject and class to the respective schools. These reports offer a broader overview of the performance of students in a particular subject and class level.
