About IEO

The International English Olympiad (IEO) is a prestigious exam conducted to assess the English language skills of students. Organized by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF), the IEO aims to promote and nurture English language proficiency among students from Class 1 to Class 12. The exam evaluates various aspects of English language learning, including grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and written expression.

The IEO exam follows a competitive format and is conducted at different levels, catering to the specific grade levels of the participants. It tests students’ ability to understand and interpret English texts, their knowledge of grammar rules, and their vocabulary usage. Eligibility​

The International English Olympiad (IEO) is a competition that evaluates English comprehension and usage skills. It promotes inclusivity, welcoming students from all races, languages, and nationalities. This global competition prepares students to become knowledgeable global citizens in our increasingly interconnected world. Below are the eligibility criteria for the IEO:

  • Grade Range: Students in grades 6 to 12 are eligible to participate in the International English Olympiad.

  • Essay and Questions: Candidates are required to write an essay on a given subject or question. Additionally, they must answer three related questions connected to the essay. Competitors must possess the ability to read and comprehend subjects and questions solely in the English language.

  • SOF-approved School: Students must be enrolled in a school approved by the Science Olympiad Foundation (S.O.F.).

  • Grade Level Requirement: To be eligible for the IEO students must be in or between Classes 1 and 12.

  • Application and Payment: Students must complete the application form in its entirety and make the required payment to be considered eligible for participation.

Since its inception in 2000, the IEO has been organized annually by the Science Olympiad Foundation, attracting students from India and around the world to participate year after year. The IEO serves as a platform to showcase and enhance students’ English language skills, fostering international cooperation and understanding through the medium of language.

Syllabus

The question papers provided by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) are categorized based on their complexity levels. While the IEO syllabus remains consistent across schools and grades, the quality of questions may vary. The question paper aims to assess a student’s abilities in the following areas:

  • Understanding of words and sentence structures: This section tests a student’s grasp of vocabulary, grammar rules, and their ability to comprehend the meaning of words and sentences.

  • Reading comprehension: The IEO includes passages or texts that assess a student’s reading skills, such as understanding the main idea, making inferences, and drawing conclusions.

  • Expression in spoken and written form: This segment focuses on evaluating a student’s proficiency in expressing themselves both verbally and in writing. It may involve tasks like descriptive writing, expressing opinions, or presenting ideas.

  • Achievers section: This special section features advanced-level questions designed to challenge high-achieving students and assess their in-depth understanding of English language concepts.

The IEO’s question paper structure aims to comprehensively evaluate a student’s English language abilities, covering areas of vocabulary, grammar, reading, and communication skills.

Application Process

In order to participate in the International English Olympiad 2022, students are required to register through their school. Independent applications from students are not accepted for the Olympiad.

To obtain the IEO 2022 application form, students need to approach their school’s Principal, Vice-Principal, or Teacher In-Charge. The students must complete the entire application form, providing the necessary details as requested. Additionally, they should submit the required funds along with the application form to their school. The school will then process the applications and submit them collectively to the Science Olympiad Foundation (S.O.F.) as per the specified guidelines and deadlines.
